Bumpsteer Adjustment - 2005-03-31
This is the definition given to bumpsteer by the guys at MaximumMotorsports. They provide 2 ways to correct bumpsteer when using their K-Member. Aluminum Offset Rack Bushings and Adjustable Tie Rod Ends. When using a stock k-member they only recommend the Tie Rod ends and/or NON Offset Rack Bushings. Since I installed their k-member, I installed both.
Aluminum Offset Rack Bushings These are very easy to install. Basically you remove the stock inner and outer rubber bushings and replace the outer bushing with the aluminum one.
Adjustable Tie Rod Ends The install is fairly simple, aside the fact that you have to remove the spindle completely and have a 5/8" hole machined to accept the new tie rod bolt. Before you decided to get this kit remember that you will have to remove the spindle. Doing this you will more than likely damage the ball joint boot causing it to leak grease. Once you do this the ball joint will be basically useless. It will fail very rapidly. For this reason it is easier to install the bumpsteer kit along with new ball joints or a new set of lower control arms. Also you will want to check around for a machine shop with a mill or very sturdy drill press. I have a Craftsman Drill Press but I would not trust it to drill an accurate 5/8" hole in the spindle. Just be sure to factor in this cost into the kit.
Once you get the spindle milled out all you have left to do for the install is unscrew the stock tie rod ends, thread up the new ones and tighten them down and install the new bolts with the spacers. Once everything is back together you will want to get the toe set then follow the included directions on measuring and adjusting for the bumpsteer. This is a time consuming process, so if you are not ready to build the required tools (about $40 in parts) and take the time to actually measure and set bumpsteer correctly then I would HIGHLY suggest not getting a bumpsteer kit. I would post the instructions for measuring bumpsteer however they have been copyrighted by Maximum Motorsports. Also I do not fell they are necessary for a street vehicle. Unless you spend a majority of your miles at the local track skip this mod. |
